improvident lackwit: When You Could Have Said,...
From John Gruber, we get a discussion on using Greasemonkey to uncensor the Internet. This reminded me of the offense that a prison officer took to Sideshow Bob’s characterization of the jail in his parole hearing: Lawyer: Robert, if released, would you pose any threat to one Bart Simpson? Sideshow Bob: [barely in control] Bart Simpson? Ha! The spirited little scamp who twice foiled my...

Urban Vancouver: My Year of Meats by Ruth Ozeki...
Almost missed this amidst Canuck Fever, but the Vancouver Public Library has announced that My Year of Meats by Ruth Ozeki has been selected for Vancouver’s city-wide book club. Here’s the description from the OBOV website: Jane, an American filmmaker, is hired by a beef lobbying group to make television shows for the Japanese market. As she grows more familiar with her subject, she...

Urban Vancouver: Round 2 Predictions? Consensus...
After the Canucks won in the two most exciting periods I’d seen in a long time (the second and the third), I’m still left with a few questions: who’s playing hurt? Remember when Naslund played hurt and resorted to slapshots in the previous playoffs? People are saying Sami Salo is banged up, but I think that’s just because of the trip in Game 7, which looked to me like...

Urban Vancouver: Game 7 Prediction:...
I can say with 100% confidence that one of either the Dallas Stars or the Vancouver Canucks will move on to the second round of the 2007 NHL playoffs. It’s a coin toss, as Dave put it on Saturday’s Canucks Outsider Live, but Vancouverites win both ways: if the local hockey team moves on, we dance on the streets; if they lost, then we enter True Vancouver Daylight Savings Time, that...

Urban Vancouver: Reminder: Canucks Outsider Live...
Tonight the Canucks play the hated Dallas Stars in Game 6, and I’m going to be part of the group at the Canucks Outsider featuring my ill-informed punditry. Watch it live at http://ustream.tv/canucksoutsider and watch as I startle strangers by yelling loudly when the home team scores. Dave will no doubt bring up Hockey Night in Iceland, and it’s my understanding that he doesn’t...

Urban Vancouver: Discollection's Closing Sale...
Almost two months now I wrote about a sale at Discollection, a vintage clothing store on Hastings in Vancouver. Now comes word via email that the store is closing its doors, and is having a final ‘fill a bag’ sale. From Kim, the proprietor: Starting April 23rd at 12PM we will be having a week long ” fill a bag” sale, so for all of you that missed out the last time around...

Urban Vancouver: Game 5 Prediction: Canucks to Win...
Everybody I talked to thinks the Canucks are going close out the series against the Dallas Stars tonight, but nobody thinks they’re going to win by as much as I think they are, 4 goals to 1. (The consensus is 2-1, maybe 3-1 with an empty-netter.) Also I’m going with Cowan for the game-winner, despite my two wrong predictions that he would score the overtime winner in Games 1 and...

Urban Vancouver: The Roberto Luongo Song
The Malahoff Sanderband wrote in last week to ask us if we could point to their new jam, “The Luongo Song”, an MP3 of which you can purchase through their website. Gotta love a song that starts of with “bingo bongo”. It woke me up as I currently have TEAM 1040 as the station my alarm clock is set to, and I had to chuckle. (via Richard Eriksson aggregator)

Urban Vancouver: New Features on Urban Vancouver:...
A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded the software that powers Urban Vancouver to version 4.7. The way the version numbers work for Drupal, that means we’re still one major version behind, but at least it’s better than being 3 major versions behind. The site is also on a new server which is humming along nicely, and after a bit of fiddling around, the aggregator (which powers the right...

Urban Vancouver: Game 2 and Game 3 Quick Recaps...
Game 2 wasn’t a lot of fun from a Vancouver Canucks fan’s perspective: seeing Turco shut us out and the opposing team dominate the home team so thoroughly for at least 2 periods was frustrating to watch. Same goes for Game 3 in Dallas: I fully expected the Stars to shut the Canucks down after they scored on the power play, but at least they pulled it out with a Jan Bulis garbage goal...

Urban Vancouver: Would You Rather Listen to Jim...
Just a few seconds before Game 2 between the Dallas Stars and the Vancouver Canucks, and during the game on Wednesday, I tried a little experiment. As much as I like Jim Hughson’s competent play-by-play, it’s a lot more fun to get swept up by John Shorthouse and Tom Larscheid. More so than Hughson, Shorty and Larscheid are homers, in that they’re fans who have an obvious bias...

Urban Vancouver: Canucks Win Western Conference...
Like many last night, I endured the over 5 hours of Canucks hockey, and was truly entertained by the first period before the two teams settled down into their “system”. It doesn’t seem to be listed in box scores, but the Canucks dominated on faceoffs. It wasn’t even close. That said, the Stars dominated on shots, with Luongo providing yet another ridiculous save, this...
