Before seeing this, I had an idea for a Tumblr called “Look at These Fucking Guys In Suits Taking the Bus!” subtitled “See, guys, it really is OK.” When was the last time you saw someone wearing a suit taking the bus? They’re all over the Canada Line (businesspeople will ride a train with smelly people but not a bus with smelly people.) This non-Tumblr is the opposite end.

No Cellos in the subway:

When I got off the Skytrain at Waterfront there was a very nice Cello sound coming through the tunnel. It may not have been the best performance, but it was a nice addition to the afternoon rush. A moment after I passed the gentlemen in blue came by to put an end to things. I guess the kid was a little too deep into the station. As I was putting my camera away one of them came by to question me. It turns out that photos in the transit system are frowned upon with the Olympics on the way.

My friend Kai was in town for two weeks so I knew I had to take the opportunity to include her in my portrait series. We both have red coats, so I decided to photograph her with my red umbrella and a Japanese Maple tree for maximum red.

New York has the High Line and San Francisco is going to get the Bay Line – both abandoned rail lines turned into public parks. Now Chicago is looking to do the same with the Bloomingdale Rail Line, a 3 mile section of elevated train track running east and west into the heart of downtown.

I can’t wait for Vancouver to follow suit and turn the Arbutus Corridor into a public park.

SF and NYC actually have decent transit already though. Wouldn’t it make so much more sense to put light-rail down the Arbutus corridor instead. Westsiders already got all the parks.

Disagree. If Vancouver were truly envious of those cities, since NYC and San Francisco have done it, and Chicago’s doing it, so should Vancouver.

Why is it that progressivism in smaller metros is so often associated with low numbers of African Americans? Can you have a progressive city properly so-called with only a disproportionate handful of African Americans in it? In addition, why has no one called these cities on it?

As the college educated flock to these progressive El Dorados, many factors are cited as reasons: transit systems, density, bike lanes, walkable communities, robust art and cultural scenes. But another way to look at it is simply as White Flight writ large. Why move to the suburbs of your stodgy Midwest city to escape African Americans and get criticized for it when you can move to Portland and actually be praised as progressive, urban and hip?
